Japan’s NYK Group has introduced a lubricating oil analysis service aimed at monitoring ammonia-fueled engines, part of its initiative to promote alternative fuels in shipping. This service, developed by its subsidiary Nippon Yuka Kogyo, is designed to identify early signs of engine abnormalities when using ammonia as fuel.
Ammonia is emerging as a promising maritime fuel due to its low greenhouse gas emissions during combustion, yet it necessitates innovative monitoring techniques for engine performance. The lubricating oil analysis assesses internal engine conditions, facilitating early detection of potential issues and enhancing operational reliability.
NYK Group’s service, backed by successful verification trials, will be available to both its companies and external clients. It is set to launch at the Sea Japan maritime exhibition on April 22, 2026. This initiative is part of NYK’s comprehensive strategy to advance decarbonization in shipping by incorporating next-generation fuels, including ammonia.
