On May 30, 2026, the Shipping Ministry announced that the Marshall Island-flagged crude oil tanker, Nissos Keros, successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz while carrying 270,000 tonnes of crude oil on the night of May 25-26. The vessel is scheduled to reach Visakhapatnam port on June 3, marking a significant transit through this crucial maritime route.
Currently, there are 13 Indian-flagged vessels operating west of the Strait of Hormuz. During an inter-ministerial briefing, Opesh Kumar Sharma from the Shipping Ministry addressed inquiries regarding India’s coordination with Iran and other stakeholders to ensure safe passage for ships. While he refrained from disclosing specific details for security reasons, he confirmed that coordination is primarily managed through the Ministry of External Affairs.
Sharma elaborated that the prioritization of vessels for transit is a collaborative effort involving the petroleum and fertilizer ministries. This strategic coordination underscores India’s commitment to maintaining the safety and efficiency of maritime operations in a region often fraught with geopolitical tensions.
