Rewriting Women into Maritime History and the SHE_SEES exhibition are aiming to have a global impact by sharing the stories of women working in the maritime industry worldwide. This initiative will span over three years, starting in 2025 with Greece, the Netherlands, and India. Led by portrait photographer Emilie Sandy, SHE_SEES is encouraging women to participate in the project and share their own stories through the participatory photography element, SHE_SEES HER VOICE. This collaborative effort will empower women in the sector to shape and control their own narratives, fostering connection and representation.
SHE_SEES HER VOICE is currently seeking eight female harbour pilots from different parts of the world to share their experiences. Those interested in participating can find more information on the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Heritage Centre website or by contacting email protected Louise Sanger, Head of Research, Interpretation, and Engagement at the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Heritage Centre, expressed excitement about the momentum gained by the Rewriting Women into Maritime History initiative and SHE_SEES, shedding light on forgotten stories from the past and inspiring the next generation to consider a career in the maritime sector.
The SHE_SEES exhibition, launched in the UK and Ireland in 2023, uses archival material and oral histories to showcase the stories of women in the maritime industry. By highlighting the expertise, experience, and leadership of women in the sector, the program aims to challenge the predominantly masculine narrative of the industry and attract more individuals to pursue opportunities within maritime careers. Dr. Jo Stanley, a maritime historian specializing in gender and diversity, emphasized the importance of connecting past, present, and future contributions of women in maritime life. Additionally, Lloyd’s Register Foundation commemorated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science by releasing a new film in collaboration with Historic England, uncovering the history of women in shipbuilding in the UK.
