Ulsan Port Supplies Green Ammonia to Dual-Fuel Carrier Terra Clove

The Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) in South Korea has supplied about 800 tonnes of green ammonia as fuel to Terra Clove, a newly launched Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC). The operation took place on 25–26 October 2026 at Pier 2 of Ulsan Main Port, on the south-east coast of South Korea facing the East Sea. Ulsan is one of the country’s biggest industrial and shipbuilding centres.

Terra Clove is a 93,000 cubic metre carrier owned by Eastern Pacific Shipping and built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. It is described as the world’s first ocean-going VLAC that can burn ammonia as well as conventional fuel. The ammonia was transferred by the pipe-to-ship method, with fuel sent by pipeline from shore facilities directly to the vessel. LOTTE Fine Chemical supplied the fuel, and the work was carried out as a partnership between the port, the owner, the shipyard and the supplier. The port described it as a demonstration of its bunkering capability.

This is Ulsan’s second green ammonia bunkering. In April 2026, the port supplied about 600 tonnes by the same method to a smaller gas tanker. UPA President Byeon Jaeyoung said the project showed the value of close cooperation between authorities and industry.

Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel, but it is toxic and needs strict handling. As more ammonia-fuelled ships and bunkering ports come into service, seafarers on these vessels will need specialised training in fuel transfer, leak detection, personal protective equipment and emergency response before they sail on them.
