Greek seafarers are set to initiate a 24-hour nationwide strike on May 1, coinciding with International Workers’ Day, as announced by the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO). The strike will commence at 12:01 a.m. and conclude at midnight, significantly affecting ferry routes and maritime services throughout the country.
The union’s leadership unanimously agreed on this action to underscore their ongoing demands, which include enhanced safety measures at sea, better working conditions, and the reinforcement of collective bargaining agreements. PNO also stressed the importance of maintaining and improving the public and accessible nature of maritime education, advocating for reforms to adapt to the rapid technological advancements in the shipping industry.
Additionally, the federation’s broader demands encompass support for public health and education systems, along with compensation for maritime pensioners who have faced financial losses in recent years. The strike serves not only as a protest but also as a call to action for the government to address these critical issues affecting seafarers and the maritime sector as a whole.
