The Confederation of Icelandic Enterprise (SA), representing Eimskip, has successfully negotiated an agreement with the Seafarers’ Union of Iceland (SÍ) concerning harbor employees at Sundahöfn port. This agreement has effectively averted a planned strike by SÍ, which was set to commence on May 26, 2026, and has since been canceled.

As part of the agreement, collective wage negotiations will be postponed until October 31, 2026. During this interim period, a comprehensive competency analysis of port operations will be conducted, with a strike embargo in place for the duration of this analysis.

Additionally, efforts are underway to establish a formal competency-based pay system for harbor employees. This system will utilize an objective job evaluation framework, where employee competence, skills, and responsibilities will guide wage determination and salary progression. The Education and Training Service Centre (Fræðslumiðstöð atvinnulífsins) is tasked with classifying roles according to competency levels based on the Icelandic Qualifications Framework, with completion expected by October 25, 2026.
