Iran has accused the United States of breaching a ceasefire following U.S. airstrikes in Hormozgan province, which the Iranian foreign ministry labeled a “gross violation.” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that discussions to resolve the ongoing conflict might take several days. Both nations had previously shown signs of progress towards a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities and restoring shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the ongoing negotiations, tensions have escalated. The U.S. conducted defensive strikes against Iranian targets, reportedly including boats attempting to lay mines. Rubio emphasized the importance of keeping the Strait open. The conflict, which erupted in February following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, has severely disrupted global oil supply, driving up costs for fuel and food.

Amidst these tensions, Iran’s Supreme Leader declared the region would no longer serve as a protective barrier for American bases, asserting that anti-U.S. sentiments would grow stronger. Recent indirect talks have hinted at a potential initial deal between Iran and the U.S., focusing on releasing frozen Iranian assets. Iranian negotiators have made it clear that concluding the memorandum is contingent upon addressing financial concerns, primarily the unfreezing of approximately $24 billion in assets.
