On Tuesday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker experienced an external explosion on its port side, near the waterline. This incident occurred approximately 60 nautical miles from Muscat, the capital of Oman.
The vessel involved, identified as the Olympic Life, was confirmed to have its crew safe. However, the tanker did report a discharge of bunker fuel into the sea. The UKMTO noted that the cause of the explosion remains undetermined at this time.
Tracking data from MarineTraffic indicates that the Greek-owned very large crude carrier was navigating past Muscat around 07:00 GMT. At the time of the incident, the tanker was heading out of the Gulf of Oman and was not carrying any cargo.
Authorities are likely to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion to ascertain the cause and any potential environmental impacts resulting from the fuel discharge. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
