NEW DELHI, Apr 23: India’s shipping ministry expressed concern for Indian seafarers operating in the Strait of Hormuz following reports of vessels coming under fire in the area. Fortunately, no Indian nationals have been reported injured in these incidents.
Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary at the Indian Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, confirmed that two foreign-flagged ships targeted in the region had a total of 22 Indian sailors on board. He reassured that all Indian seafarers remained unharmed during the firing incidents.
In light of the ongoing conflict, the ministry reported that at least 2,680 Indian seafarers have been evacuated from the region. The situation underscores the heightened risks faced by commercial shipping in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint for global energy shipments, has experienced escalating tensions in recent weeks. This has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of both vessels and their crews navigating through this critical passage.
