On Sunday, the Indian government advised citizens to carefully evaluate the security conditions before accepting jobs in maritime zones experiencing conflicts, particularly in the Black Sea region. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed concerns over the volatile security situation in and around these waters, which has been exacerbated by ongoing conflicts. This warning follows recent incidents where five Indian nationals lost their lives due to attacks on commercial vessels in the area.
The MEA specifically cautioned Indian nationals considering employment on commercial vessels in these conflict-affected regions to thoroughly assess the security risks. It highlighted that commercial vessels operating in or transiting these waters face significant threats, including missile and drone strikes. Since April, there has been a notable increase in such incidents, leading to tragic consequences.
Those who decide to work in these areas are urged to exercise extreme caution and adhere to safety protocols. The MEA recommended that prospective employees gather detailed information from employers and recruitment agencies about the vessel’s route, security measures, insurance, and emergency procedures. It also emphasized the importance of ensuring that employment terms meet international maritime standards, providing adequate medical care and evacuation provisions.
Additionally, the MEA encouraged individuals to keep their families informed about their travel plans and maintain regular communication. For consular assistance, Indian nationals were advised to reach out to the Embassy of India or regional Consulates.
