Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized the Philippine government’s commitment to respecting Algeria’s legal processes while providing support to detained Filipino nationals. She stated that the government is pursuing all legal avenues to safeguard the rights of the three remaining seafarers who are currently facing legal challenges in Algeria.

The three seafarers were part of a group of eight Filipino crew members arrested on July 28, 2023, after authorities found approximately 35.8 kilograms of cocaine on the commercial vessel CV Harris at the Port of Algiers. While five crew members have been released, the three continue to navigate ongoing legal proceedings.

According to Castro, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) are actively providing legal and welfare assistance to the detained seafarers. She noted that legal representatives have successfully secured the dismissal of charges against five of the crew members. The sentences for the remaining three have been reduced, and they are now awaiting the results of their appeal.

Additionally, the government has facilitated compassionate visits from family members during the seafarers’ detention and has provided financial assistance to those who have returned to the Philippines. Castro also mentioned that the vessel’s owner has been sending remittances to support the families of the detained crew members throughout the legal process.
