At the Posidonia Trade Fair, DNV Maritime’s Regional Manager for Korea and Japan, Vidar Dolonen, presented an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate to Hongryeul Ryu, CTO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). This certificate recognizes HHI’s innovative design for a new LPG dual-fuel 1,400 TEU container vessel.

While LNG has been the primary alternative fuel for container ships, LPG presents a viable option that promises enhanced efficiency and reduced emissions. The new design aims to balance capital and operational costs while simplifying the fuel system and vessel design.

To cater to the smaller container segment, HHI’s LPG dual-fuel design mirrors existing LNG systems, minimizing technical risks and ensuring operational reliability. The vessel’s layout maximizes cargo capacity and ensures crew safety by segregating living quarters from hazardous zones.

Additionally, the design features a Type-C LPG storage tank and an LPG Low Flashpoint Fuel Supply System, strategically placed on the aft deck to enhance cargo operations and reduce risks. A composite boiler integrated with an LPG Gas Combustion Unit also supports efficient boil-off gas management. The AiP confirms the design’s feasibility and indicates no significant technical barriers to implementation.
