The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has honored Norwegian rescue diver Adrian Willyson Brask posthumously with its annual Exceptional Bravery at Sea award. Brask, a chief mate with the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue, tragically lost his life while attempting to save a child from a capsized fishing vessel in 2025. His heroic actions will be recognized globally, highlighting his selflessness and dedication to maritime safety.

On September 26, 2025, a chartered fishing boat capsized in the turbulent waters of Nappstraumen, Lofoten, Norway, with six individuals aboard, including two children. Following a distress call, search and rescue teams dispatched a helicopter and the lifeboat Det Norsk Veritas. Upon arrival, rescuers found six survivors but one young girl was missing.

Brask bravely entered the frigid waters to search for the child beneath the capsized vessel. Despite his thorough efforts, he did not survive the ordeal and was later found unresponsive. The missing girl was never located. The IMO Council selected Brask from 50 nominations for his extraordinary courage and self-sacrifice, with Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez lauding his commitment to saving lives.

In addition to Brask, several other nominees will receive commendations for their bravery, including members of the Philippine Coast Guard and various maritime crews who demonstrated exceptional valor during emergencies at sea. Brask’s formal recognition will take place in December.
