Britain’s leading ports operator is set to launch the largest floating solar project in the country at the Port of Barrow, located north of Liverpool on England’s eastern coastline. The “Barrow EnergyDock” will be situated in the Cavendish Dock, a former harbor basin now serving as an enclosed reservoir. This innovative project aims to generate up to 40 MW of power, primarily catering to customers in the advanced manufacturing sector, such as BAe Systems’ submarine manufacturing plant. Additionally, the port stands to benefit from lower-cost electricity through this initiative.

The floating solar station will feature 47,000 panels mounted on floating pontoons anchored to the dock’s bottom. This setup, covering a third of the surface area, will allow for the remaining space to be utilized for recreational activities like fishing. ABP, the port operator, emphasizes that using the water area for power generation leaves land free for potential port expansion in the future. The project, subject to planning approval, could be completed within 9-12 months.

Prior to proceeding with the project, ABP conducted wildlife surveys and public planning meetings to address any potential concerns. The company envisions further development at the Port of Barrow, including infrastructure to support offshore wind operations and a new jetty. The Barrow EnergyDock represents a significant step towards sustainable energy generation and port growth, showcasing the potential for innovative solutions in the maritime industry.
