Dr. Dayo Mobereola, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), announced that the agency is in the process of revising the curriculum for the Standard Training Certification and Watch-keeping (STCW) 2017, which is utilized by Maritime Training Institutions in Nigeria. This update was discussed during a meeting with the Governing Board of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, led by Chairman Engr. Kehinde Akinola, who visited NIMASA’s headquarters in Lagos.
Dr. Mobereola emphasized that for over 32 years, Nigerian training institutions have relied on outdated curricula. NIMASA aims to align its training standards with globally recognized benchmarks to ensure that Nigerian seafarers’ certifications hold international credibility. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between NIMASA and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria as essential for advancing the training of seafarers in the country.
Engr. Akinola acknowledged the Academy’s state-of-the-art facilities, positioning it as a leading maritime training institution in Africa. He expressed gratitude for NIMASA’s ongoing support and shared that the Academy has developed a five-year plan, which includes acquiring a training vessel to enhance cadets’ practical training. Additionally, he mentioned interest from the Liberian Maritime Administration in collaborating with the Academy, which would offer Nigerian cadets opportunities for sea-time training on Liberian-flagged vessels, thereby improving their competitiveness in the global maritime job market.
