Le Sen, a 54-year-old man, has been sentenced by the People’s Court of Quang Nam Province for his role in the Phuong Dong 05 excursion boat capsizing incident that took place on February 26, 2022, near Hoi An in central Vietnam. Sen was in charge of the boat when it capsized in rough weather conditions.
An investigation conducted by local authorities revealed that Sen had been operating the boat at a speed of 10 knots, which was double the maximum turning speed of 5 knots allowed for the vessel. This reckless maneuver led to the boat capsizing and taking in water. Tragically, some passengers were unable to escape as the boat lacked emergency exits.
The incident highlights the importance of adhering to safety regulations and proper training for those operating watercraft, particularly in challenging weather conditions. The court’s decision to hold Sen accountable for his actions serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with operating excursion boats and ensuring the safety of passengers onboard. Such negligence can have devastating consequences and must be addressed with appropriate legal measures to prevent future tragedies.
