The European Commission has proposed to include two ship recycling facilities in Alang, India, in its approved European List, a move that Danish Shipping applauds as a significant advancement for responsible ship recycling. This proposal acknowledges facilities that comply with the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, regardless of their location.
Nina Porst, Executive Director of Sustainable Ships & Skills at Danish Shipping, emphasized the importance of recognizing facilities that meet the EU’s stringent environmental and safety standards. She stated that rewarding such investments encourages further improvements in the global ship recycling industry, ensuring that more vessels are recycled under safe and environmentally sound conditions.
The proposal also responds to an increasing demand for recycling capacity, with over 16,000 ships projected to need recycling in the next decade—an increase from the past ten years. Expanding the list of approved facilities is essential for accommodating larger ocean-going vessels.
Porst highlighted the progress made by leading facilities in Alang under the Hong Kong Convention and urged EU Member States and the European Parliament to back the Commission’s proposal. She called for ongoing assessments of facilities that meet EU regulations to ensure responsible recycling options for Danish and European shipowners in the future.
