The Solomon Islands government has launched the Maritime Labor Mobility and Shipping Registry National Roadmap Policy, aimed at providing job opportunities for seafarers in international vessels. The policy was unveiled at the Solomon Kitano Mendana Hotel in Honiara by Minister for Infrastructure and Development, Manasseh Maelanga. He emphasized the need for the country to explore labor mobility schemes in the international maritime industry to attract more maritime operators and enhance the country’s maritime sector.
Under the government’s initiative, the Maritime College at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) will be upgraded to train local students to become internationally-recognized seafarers. Minister Maelanga highlighted the importance of prioritizing maritime safety, sustainability, environmental cleanliness, and digital innovation in shaping the future of the maritime industry. This policy represents a significant step towards aligning the country’s sea transport sector with global standards and expectations.
The government’s focus on enhancing transport services and collaborating with stakeholders to build a robust maritime sector has positioned Solomon Islands at the forefront of maritime development. SINU Vice Chancellor, Professor Transform Aqorau, welcomed the initiative to upgrade the Maritime College and expressed enthusiasm for the new policy. This policy is seen as a positive step towards creating job opportunities for local seafarers and ensuring the country’s maritime sector remains dynamic and efficient.
