New Delhi, July 29 (IANS) – In light of ongoing geopolitical tensions, the Indian government has instructed officials to ensure continuous coordination among all relevant agencies, prioritizing the safety of Indian seafarers. The Centre has emphasized the importance of close collaboration with Indian Missions abroad, shipping companies, and maritime authorities to create a proactive and integrated response mechanism capable of swift action.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal conducted a thorough review of the welfare and safety of Indian mariners operating in conflict-prone areas. He reiterated the government’s dedication to keeping every Indian seafarer safe, informed, and supported, stressing that no mariner should be endangered by geopolitical conflicts. Sonowal highlighted the necessity of taking all possible measures to protect seafarers and their families, ensuring timely assistance when needed.
The Directorate General of Shipping reported that its Seafarer Grievance and Assistance Cell is operational 24/7, offering support through dedicated helplines and grievance redressal systems. Additionally, initiatives are underway to raise awareness among seafarers, including structured pre-departure orientation programs conducted by Recruitment and Placement Service Licensees (RPSLs). These programs aim to equip seafarers with knowledge about operational conditions and security protocols in potentially hazardous regions.
Sonowal emphasized that the government’s responsibilities extend beyond physical safety, advocating for timely information and emotional support for seafarers and their families. He called for the integration of mental health support into the seafarer welfare framework and stressed the importance of transparent communication regarding operational risks as part of pre-deployment preparation.
