The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and dry bulk association INTERCARGO have urged governments and conflict parties to respect international law, safeguard merchant shipping, and prioritize the safety of merchant mariners. This appeal follows a surge in attacks on commercial vessels, especially in the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea, underscoring the vulnerabilities faced by the maritime sector.
According to INTERCARGO, seafarers are essential for maintaining global trade, and their status as civilians means they should not be seen as military targets. The organization highlighted incidents where innocent merchant vessels, unrelated to active conflicts, have been directly attacked, endangering the lives of ordinary seafarers. ICS Secretary General Thomas Kazakos noted that the maritime industry is grappling with multiple crises across significant trade waterways, emphasizing that the safety and freedom of navigation are crucial not just for trade but also for the crews involved.
These concerns echo prior warnings from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which condemned attacks on merchant vessels and called for the protection of seafarers who are not part of the conflicts. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) also voiced its concerns, stressing that escalating conflicts are claiming the lives of innocent seafarers and calling for an immediate end to such hostilities. The impact of rising security threats is further affecting global grain markets, pushing prices to two-year highs and causing shipping disruptions in vital agricultural corridors.
