Experts from the EU CLEANSHIP project discovered that B100 FAME biodiesel can reduce black carbon emissions from ships by up to 81% at low engine loads and 61% at high loads, compared to traditional marine gas oil. This significant reduction highlights biodiesel’s potential to improve the shipping industry’s climate footprint.
The IMO MEPC 82 discusses regulating black carbon emissions from shipping. The transition to “polar fuels” and use of technology can reduce emissions significantly. New ECAs in the Canadian Arctic and Norwegian Sea aim to reduce pollutants, with potential for more areas. Urgent action is needed to protect the Arctic environment from irreversible damage.
