The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has officially designated four ports as India’s first “mega ports” under the Indian Ports Act, 2025: Mundra, Deendayal, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Paradip. This classification prioritizes performance, notably high cargo volumes, indicating a strategic shift in India’s maritime infrastructure focus.
Last week, the MSC Alexandra lost its moorings during a sudden thunderstorm, colliding with a new pier at Mundra Port, India. Strong winds broke the ship’s mooring lines, causing it to drift. Fortunately, waterfront workers escaped just before the incident, while the ship sounded its horn to warn others.
On March 16, the LPG tanker Shivalik docked at Mundra port, successfully traversing the Strait of Hormuz amid regional tensions. Iranian authorities permitted its passage alongside the Nanda Devi, which is set to reach Kandla port. Shipping Ministry officials confirmed the safety of all Indian seafarers active in the Persian Gulf.
