In response to the Hormuz crisis, India has updated its transshipment regulations to improve cargo handling at its ports, aiming to attract volumes diverted from the Persian Gulf. This adjustment reduces dwell times and enhances efficiency, positioning Indian terminals as competitive alternatives amid regional instability and boosting local energy supply chains.
Kerala Ports Minister V N Vasavan recently announced that the Vizhinjam transshipment port has handled three lakh TEUs of cargo in a successful six-month trial period. With a cost of Rs 8,867 crore, the port has welcomed 150 ships and managed 85,000 TEUs in January alone, solidifying its position as a key trade gateway for India.
Netaji Subhas Dock is a major container terminal on India’s east coast, handling 0.63 million TEU in FY 2024. Serving states like West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam, it is a key hub for liner vessels en route to transshipment hubs in Port Kelang, Colombo, and Singapore.
Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Port Development and Employment’ at the Kerala Gazetted Officers’ Association Conference, emphasis was placed on the economic impact of the Vizhinjam International Port in Kerala. Panelists highlighted the importance of using natural opportunities to maximize port development, reduce pollution, and rejuvenate struggling sectors like cashew.
