A seminar on ‘Port Development and Employment’ held during the 58th State Conference of the Kerala Gazetted Officers’ Association emphasized the significant economic development that the Vizhinjam International Port will bring to the state. The panel stressed the importance of Kerala utilizing its natural opportunities for port development to the fullest, as it is the only place in India with such potential.
According to NS Pillai, Chairman of the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB), port development plays a crucial role in economic growth and can help in preventing brain drain and money outflow from the state. The seminar highlighted that transporting goods by water is 25% cheaper than by road, and regulating road traffic can reduce pollution from carbon emissions. Suggestions were made to transport dangerous goods by sea to enhance safety.
CEO of Kerala Cashew, A. Alexander, stated that port development can help overcome the current crisis in the cashew sector. The seminar also noted that besides the Vizhinjam International Port, the development of other ports like Kollam could bring about significant changes in sectors such as tourism, and traditional industries like cashew, coconut, and fishing.
