The Explorer of the Seas, a large cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, experienced a terrifying ordeal when it encountered near hurricane-force winds, causing the ship to roll dramatically. Videos and images shared online captured the chaos onboard, with passengers sliding around and items scattered everywhere. Following the incident, passengers were asked to return to their cabins as the crew assessed injuries and ensured everyone’s safety. Unfortunately, several passengers and crew members sustained injuries, with one individual requiring more extensive medical care.
The cruise ship, with a capacity of approximately 3,300 passengers and 1,185 crew members, had been battling adverse weather conditions during its Atlantic crossing from Spain to Florida. Prior to the incident, the ship had altered its itinerary, diverting to Tenerife instead of the Azores due to inclement weather. The ship was approximately 750 miles off the coast of Morocco when it encountered the severe weather, with wind speeds reaching up to 75 mph. In response to the situation, the Explorer of the Seas turned back and is heading to Las Palmas, Spain for medical disembarkation and to restock supplies before continuing its journey.
Passengers praised Captain Frank for his swift response to the emergency, with the crew working diligently to clean up the ship and restore order. Major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean International, have operational centers that monitor weather conditions and provide guidance to ships to avoid potential hazards. While cruise ships typically adjust their routes to steer clear of dangerous weather, unforeseen circumstances can sometimes lead to unexpected challenges at sea.
