Global shippers met in Montreal to discuss which sustainable fuels to use for vessels that will still be operational in 2050. Various fuel options, such as methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, and nuclear propulsion, were considered at the International Chamber of Shipping summit. The industry group, representing over 80% of the world’s merchant fleet, advocated for a levy on maritime greenhouse gas emissions to drive the adoption of renewable fuels.
Chairman Emanuele Grimaldi emphasized the need for governments to support the availability of sustainable fuels, citing methanol as a promising option due to its potential production from waste sources. However, challenges such as the cost and safety concerns with ammonia, as well as the lack of suitable engines, were highlighted. Future propulsion technologies, such as battery power for smaller vessels and nuclear fusion for larger ships, were also discussed.
The shipping industry’s transition to sustainable fuels is hindered by a global shortage, prompting calls for increased government funding to support green supply chains and infrastructure upgrades. Protectionism and geopolitical challenges, such as attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, further complicate maritime trade. Industry leaders stress the need for collaborative efforts to address these issues and ensure a smooth transition toward environmentally friendly practices in the shipping sector.
