BIMCO’s latest campaign film, “Seafarers Deserve Fair Seas,” sheds light on the hidden dangers faced by maritime crews, emphasizing the urgent need for improved protections and fair treatment. While global trade heavily relies on maritime transport, with seafarers moving nearly 12.5 billion tonnes of goods annually—valued at approximately $16.8 trillion—these professionals confront numerous risks, including severe weather, piracy, and unjust legal repercussions.

A striking example is Andre Lasota, a ship captain who faced a harrowing ordeal after a routine voyage led to his detention over illegal cargo he was unaware of. After nearly two years in prison without trial, he was exonerated. His case is part of a troubling trend, with at least 96 seafarers reportedly criminalized since 2020, highlighting the legal vulnerabilities within the industry.

Additionally, geopolitical conflicts pose significant threats to seafarers. The recent Middle East conflict left over 20,000 stranded, with casualties reported. Jakob Larsen, BIMCO’s Chief Safety and Security Officer, calls for enhanced coordination between governments and maritime authorities to better protect crews. He stresses the importance of recognizing the human element in global trade, noting that the workers behind the vessels deserve greater acknowledgment and support.
