Contract Worker Dies Aboard Cruise Ship Under Construction at Marghera

A 34-year-old Romanian worker employed by an outside contractor died on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, aboard a cruise ship under construction at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard. Marghera is the industrial port area of Venice, on the Venetian Lagoon in north-eastern Italy, by the Adriatic Sea.

The man fell ill at about 11:00 local time while working inside the ship. According to the Fiom metalworkers’ union in Venice, he had been welding inside a confined space on a vessel close to delivery. A forensic doctor from Padua confirmed his death.

A yard rescuer and other workers also became unwell. Local newspaper La Nuova Venezia reported that three more Romanian workers fell ill, and a 50-year-old man was taken to hospital in Mestre.

A regional NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) unit took gas and chemical samples in the area. Lack of oxygen is being considered as a possible cause, but test results have not been released and the cause is still under investigation. The work area has been sealed under a judicial order, and production at the yard was stopped for the day. Fincantieri has not named the ship.

The death follows a welding accident at Fincantieri’s Ancona yard in late September, in which two subcontractor workers were killed.

The incident is a reminder for ship crews as well as yard workers. Tanks, void spaces and closed compartments can lack oxygen even when they seem safe, and welding can make the air worse. Seafarers should test the atmosphere, ventilate and follow permit-to-work rules before entry, and rescuers should never enter without breathing apparatus.
