Steerprop has been chosen to provide its advanced contra-rotating propeller (CRP) technology for Estonia’s inaugural fully electric passenger ferry, which is currently being built at Poland’s CRIST SA shipyard. The 95-meter vessel, designed by LMG Marin for the Estonian State Fleet, will be equipped with two Steerprop SP 25 CRP units featuring permanent magnet motors. This propulsion system is engineered to deliver significant thrust and enhanced efficiency in various conditions, including open water and ice.
The innovative CRP configuration utilizes two contra-rotating propellers on a single shaftline, offering superior thrust and efficiency compared to traditional single-propeller setups. The latest generation of this technology introduces pressure lubrication, which replaces immersion lubrication, resulting in reduced mechanical losses and an approximate 3.5% improvement in mechanical efficiency. This development promises unique performance enhancements, particularly for vessels navigating icy waters.
The ferry will be powered by a 3 MWh battery system, charged with renewable shore power and supported by biodiesel generators for adverse weather and emergency situations. Built to meet 1B Ice Class standards, the vessel is designed to operate in ice conditions up to 60 centimeters thick. The propulsion systems are set for delivery in late 2027, with the ferry anticipated to commence operations in late 2028. The total design and construction contract is valued at €49.93 million, which includes €28 million from the European Union Modernization Fund, along with additional financing from Estonia’s CO₂ quota trading mechanisms.
