French authorities have instructed all passengers and crew aboard the cruise ship Ambition, docked in Bordeaux, to remain on board as a precaution during medical assessments. Although officials clarified that this incident is unrelated to the hantavirus response, the decision was made due to the highly contagious nature of gastrointestinal (GI) viruses. The ship reported that approximately 50 passengers and one crew member were experiencing GI symptoms, prompting health officials to send a team to evaluate the situation and identify the pathogen involved.
The operator of the Ambition, Ambassador Cruise Line, noted a rise in reported symptoms beginning May 10, peaking on May 11 while the ship was in Brest, France. The vessel had departed Belfast on May 8 and picked up additional passengers in Liverpool the following day. The outbreak is believed to be linked to “stomach flu,” with initial tests ruling out norovirus, although further testing is ongoing. Authorities have not dismissed the possibility of food poisoning.
In response to the outbreak, the local prefect suspended disembarkation and limited interactions with the port. Ambassador Cruise Line reassured guests of their commitment to health and safety, implementing enhanced cleaning protocols, assisted dining services, and increased emphasis on hand hygiene. The Ambition, carrying over 1,200 passengers, was scheduled for a 14-day cruise, with Spain as its next destination.
