Dutch shipbuilder Damen has partnered with Yeoman Marine Services Pvt Ltd to construct tugboats in India, posing competition to Vancouver-based Robert Allan Ltd, known for its widely-used tugboat design. Both Damen and Robert Allan are experts in tugboat design and construction, but local shipowners and builders are concerned about the government’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), which they believe was biased towards the Canadian firm.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU), Damen will provide expertise in design, engineering, and supply chain, while Yeoman Marine will use modern modular techniques to build tugboats at its Ratnagiri yard in Maharashtra. This collaboration aims to enhance shipbuilding capacity in India and meet the demand for high-quality tugboats in the country. Damen operates shipyards globally, while Yeoman Marine is experienced in ship repairs and system delivery.
Harbor tugs are vital for port operations, with 350-400 tugs operating in both public and private Indian ports. Tugboats play various roles, including assisting cargo ships in docking, serving as standby vessels for safety, and providing offshore support services. They also offer significant potential for emission reduction at ports due to their unique operating profile.
The partnership between Damen and Yeoman Marine signifies a significant development in India’s shipbuilding industry and highlights the growing demand for tugboats in the region. This collaboration is expected to strengthen the country’s maritime capabilities and contribute to the enhancement of port operations and sustainability efforts.
