India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Harish P, expressed significant concerns regarding the threats to commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz during a UN General Assembly debate on April 17, 2026. He called for the immediate restoration of safe navigation, urging restraint amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Harish emphasized the critical importance of maritime security for India’s energy and economic interests, pointing out that military conflicts had made commercial shipping targets.
He highlighted the tragic human cost of the conflict, noting that Indian seafarers have been among those affected. Harish condemned attacks on civilian maritime activities, asserting that endangering innocent crew members and impeding navigation are unacceptable. He stressed the necessity for global cooperation and strict adherence to international law to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
India also reiterated its longstanding position on de-escalation and dialogue in response to the broader regional conflict. Harish urged all states to prioritize diplomatic engagement, promote dialogue, and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, emphasizing the need to address the underlying issues contributing to tensions.
