India has effectively closed its maritime routes with Pakistan, escalating efforts to diplomatically and economically isolate its neighbor. This action follows allegations that Pakistan was involved in a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, reinforcing India’s stance against its rival.
Citing Section 411 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, the Indian government has banned maritime interactions with Pakistan. As a result, vessels flying the Pakistani flag are prohibited from entering Indian ports, while Indian-flagged ships will also be barred from docking in Pakistan.
This latest move is part of a broader strategy by India to sever all forms of engagement with Pakistan, adding to previous restrictions such as the closure of airspace to Pakistani aircraft and commercial sanctions.
By shutting down maritime shipping channels, India aims to directly target Pakistan’s economic infrastructure, implementing stringent measures to exert pressure through diplomatic isolation and economic hardship.
