Merchant vessels, which are not involved in hostilities, have historically been recognized as deserving protection. Attacks on these ships endanger the lives of ordinary workers for reasons unrelated to their professional duties. INTERCARGO urges all governments, international institutions, and conflict parties to take decisive action to prevent assaults on civilian merchant shipping and ensure the safety of their crews.
Our members are essential in transporting food, fertilizer, and goods vital for people and economies. Every seafarer deserves to perform their duties safely and return home unharmed.
