In a rapid maritime operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) intercepted the Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Haridwar Krupa, suspected of mid-sea diesel smuggling off Mumbai’s coast. The successful operation underscores the ICG’s vigilance and swift response capabilities in combating illegal activities.
Following targeted surveillance of suspicious movements, ICG ships were ordered to monitor the area near Prongs Lighthouse. During a patrol, the crew detected the suspect vessel near a merchant ship. When challenged via VHF maritime communication, the IFB failed to respond and attempted to evade capture. The ICG initiated a hot pursuit and subsequently detained the boat.
Upon boarding, ICG personnel discovered the vessel’s master admitted to receiving around 4,000 liters of illicit diesel. Furthermore, the crew discharged approximately 500 liters into the sea during the chase to eliminate evidence. The boarding team confiscated all operational documents and six mobile phones for further investigation.
The detained vessel, crew, and evidence were escorted to Mumbai Harbour, where a comprehensive inquiry involving the ICG, Indian Navy, State Intelligence Bureau, and State Police has commenced. This operation reaffirms the ICG’s commitment to disrupting smuggling networks and safeguarding India’s maritime security.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance for seafarers, as the Indian Coast Guard’s recent action against illicit diesel smuggling highlights potential risks in maritime operations. It serves as a reminder to prioritize compliance with regulations and maintain awareness of surroundings to ensure safety and protect maritime integrity.
