Singapore-Flagged Container Ship Struck By Projectile,

A Singapore-flagged container ship, the GFS Pride, has sunk near the Strait of Hormuz after being struck by a projectile. Maritime security sources reported that this incident follows a recent surge in attacks in the region. The GFS Pride, which has a capacity of 2,824 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), was sailing through the strait when it sustained damage and caught fire. Fortunately, all 21 crew members were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

This sinking marks the second vessel loss since the onset of the US-Iran conflict on February 28, as noted by the International Maritime Organization. The MPA expressed deep concern over the ongoing attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, deeming them unprovoked and a violation of international law. The incident highlights the escalating threats to maritime activities in the area, which is crucial for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.

In a related event, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier Cape Dao is also reported to be sinking after being hit by a projectile on September 23. Efforts for its rescue were unsuccessful, according to maritime risk management group Vanguard. The situation reflects Iran’s increasing use of aggressive tactics against vessels in the strait, aiming to maintain high oil prices and exert influence amid geopolitical tensions.
