India and Seychelles have taken a significant step in enhancing bilateral maritime cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Recognition of Training and Certification of Seafarers. This agreement, a key outcome of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Seychelles, aims to mutually recognize the training, competency certificates, and professional qualifications of Indian seafarers. As a result, qualified Indian seafarers can now work on Seychelles-flagged vessels, aligning with international maritime standards and expanding employment opportunities in the global shipping sector.
India is recognized as a leading supplier of skilled seafarers, bolstered by a strong maritime education system and compliance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). This MoU not only enhances the global mobility of India’s maritime workforce but also reinforces its reputation as a provider of competent maritime personnel.
Furthermore, the agreement reflects a shared commitment between India and Seychelles to deepen maritime collaboration and promote capacity building in the blue economy. By facilitating the exchange of skilled professionals, the MoU aims to contribute to safer and more sustainable shipping operations, addressing the growing demand for qualified seafarers worldwide.
This initiative aligns with India’s vision of becoming a global maritime talent hub and supports ongoing efforts to enhance the competitiveness of its shipping sector. It also advances broader maritime goals under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which focus on strengthening maritime infrastructure and boosting employment in the sector. The signing of the MoU emphasizes the enduring partnership between India and Seychelles, fostering stronger maritime ties and enhancing the global maritime ecosystem through cooperation.
