On the occasion of the International Day for Women in Maritime, Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has expressed admiration for the resilience of women seafarers. He highlighted their significant contributions to the maritime industry, acknowledging the challenges they face in a traditionally male-dominated field.

In a recent social media statement, Sonowal noted that India is experiencing a notable rise in the number of women entering the seafaring profession. This surge, he explained, is a result of comprehensive policy reforms aimed at empowering women in the maritime sector. The minister emphasized that these reforms are essential for fostering inclusivity and enhancing the overall landscape of maritime operations in India.

Sonowal also underscored the concept of “Nari Shakti,” or women’s power, asserting that women are now taking leadership roles in steering both India and the global maritime industry toward a more equitable future. His remarks reflect a broader commitment to promoting gender equality within the maritime workforce, which is crucial for the sector’s growth and sustainability.
