India’s Maritime Industry to Receive ₹8 Trillion Investment by 2047

India’s maritime sector is poised for significant transformation with an expected investment of ₹8 trillion and the creation of 1.5 crore jobs by 2047, as announced by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri during India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai. He emphasized that a robust maritime industry is vital for India’s trade growth and global partnerships, playing a key role in realizing the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

Puri highlighted ongoing infrastructure developments, including the first phase of Jewar Airport, which is set to enhance trade connectivity and position India among the world’s leading hubs. The minister noted India’s extensive maritime history while illustrating the economic potential derived from its 11,000-kilometer coastline, which contributes significantly to national GDP.

To reduce reliance on foreign vessels for energy transportation, Puri outlined a policy shift targeting domestic ship ownership. Current plans include long-term charters for Indian carriers, a Maritime Development Fund for vessel financing, and enhanced support for local shipbuilding. With India’s heavy dependence on imports for oil and gas, these measures aim to strengthen the nation’s maritime capabilities.

Under Prime Minister Modi, India’s port infrastructure has nearly doubled in capacity, with improvements in operational efficiency. Puri expressed optimism about future maritime trade corridors, anticipating that by 2047, this sector will be pivotal in India’s evolution into a developed economy.
