At the Maritime Reform Utsav, the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) revealed plans to expand its fleet of Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). This initiative aims to bolster India’s energy supply chain and enhance the capacity for importing LPG and other gas products. By increasing the domestic and international transportation of gas, SCI seeks to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign chartered vessels.
The fleet expansion will accommodate the expected rise in LPG import volumes and align with the government’s initiative for cleaner energy solutions. SCI’s investment aims to ensure a more reliable and secure energy supply for domestic consumers, particularly as demand for LPG continues to rise.
This expansion is part of broader maritime reforms focused on strengthening India’s shipping infrastructure and enhancing energy security. It positions the country as a more competitive player in global gas transportation. SCI highlighted that the new VLGCs would not only support energy transition goals but also lower logistics costs associated with gas imports, fostering a more robust energy market in India.
