The Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM), linked to the RSS, has formally protested to the US Ambassador regarding the deaths of three Indian seafarers in US military actions between June 8 and June 11. In a letter, SJM expressed its “deep pain and anguish” over the alleged unprovoked killings, emphasizing that these incidents have sparked disbelief and anger across India. The organization criticized the US government’s response as insensitive, stating it has hurt Indian sentiments, given the historical friendship between the two nations.
SJM has called for a transparent, impartial investigation into the incidents, demanding accountability for both individuals and state actors involved. They also seek compensation for the families of the victims and assurances to prevent future occurrences, urging adherence to international legal obligations. SJM’s national co-convenor, Ashwani Mahajan, stressed the need for justice, asserting that the dignity and safety of Indian seafarers must be prioritized.
Mahajan highlighted that the US actions violate international laws governing maritime conduct and human rights. He pointed out that civilian lives are protected under the Geneva Conventions, asserting that seafarers should not be treated as legitimate targets. The organization insists that the killing of unarmed Indian seafarers poses a challenge to the international rule-based order, urging the US to clarify its actions.
