Shyam Jagannathan, India’s Director General of Shipping, has unveiled an eight-pillar decarbonization roadmap aimed at transforming the maritime sector, which facilitates 90%-95% of the nation’s international trade. In an interview on World Ocean Day, Jagannathan emphasized the importance of green fuels, ports, ship recycling, and training seafarers to reduce shipping’s 2%-3% contribution to global carbon emissions. He stressed that investing in sustainable shipping is critical for India’s trading future.

The Directorate General of Shipping is implementing a National Maritime Decarbonization Policy Framework that focuses on green shipping initiatives, ship recycling aligned with the Hong Kong Convention, and financing for green technologies. Key steps include upgrading energy efficiency for existing vessels and transitioning to net-zero fuels like green ammonia and hydrogen. The plan also aims to increase India’s seafarer representation from 16.5% to over 20%.

Jagannathan linked these efforts to the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 agenda, underscoring the blue economy’s role in contributing approximately 4% to India’s GDP and promoting sectors such as cruise tourism and deep-ocean mining. Revised legislative measures will streamline vessel registration and enhance domestic coastal trade, fostering public-private partnerships for infrastructure development. He also highlighted the need to protect inland water systems from pollution while reaffirming commitments to sustainable development goals.
