The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported on Thursday that amidst rising tensions in the Persian Gulf, 10 Indian vessels have successfully navigated out of the crucial Strait of Hormuz, while 14 others remain in the region. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided this update during a weekly media briefing, emphasizing the safety of Indian maritime interests.
In light of a recent security incident, Jaiswal noted that two foreign ships, which had Indian crew members aboard, were fired upon the previous day. Fortunately, he confirmed that the Indian sailors are safe. However, he clarified that the vessels involved were not registered under the Indian flag, limiting the availability of detailed information regarding the incident.
The spokesperson reiterated that the safety of Indian nationals is a top priority for the government. He highlighted ongoing communication with Iranian authorities to facilitate the safe passage of the remaining Indian vessels and their crews. “We are in continuous contact with the government of Iran to ensure that the remaining ships can return to India safely,” Jaiswal stated.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital shipping corridor, integral to global oil trade, and any escalation in tensions there can significantly impact maritime security and the safety of commercial shipping.
