Approximately 6,000 seafarers are currently stranded on numerous vessels in the Gulf, as reported by the head of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Arsenio Dominguez has called for all involved parties to exercise restraint and work towards de-escalation amidst rising tensions.
Dominguez condemned recent attacks on ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that these assaults have put innocent seafarers in serious jeopardy. He stressed that no seafarer should face life-threatening risks simply while performing their duties. In light of the current situation, he urged flag states, shipowners, and operators to refrain from using the waterway until crew safety can be guaranteed.
The recent violence has exacerbated the fear and psychological strain experienced by the nearly 6,000 seafarers who are unable to leave the Gulf safely. Dominguez reiterated that the safety of these individuals must be a top priority for all stakeholders involved. He emphasized the urgent need for collective action to ensure their well-being in these turbulent times.
