New MN RoRo Vessel to Combine Mechanical and Wind-Assisted Propulsion

Compagnie Maritime Nantaise (MN), part of the European Sogestran Group, has announced plans to build a new hybrid RoRo vessel that will utilize both conventional mechanical and wind-assisted propulsion. This vessel is specifically designed for transporting cargo within the space industry. The shipbuilding contract was formalized on August 21, 2026, with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) after a thorough process of consultations, technical assessments, site visits, and negotiations.

This new vessel aims to enhance MN’s transportation capabilities and support the expansion of the European space sector, particularly in collaboration with Avio. Expected to be operational by 2030, the ship will cater to the unique needs of transporting launch vehicles, satellites, and other sensitive equipment. This initiative builds on a strategic partnership established in June 2026 between Avio and MN, which has been fostering over 15 years of collaboration in the space industry.

The vessel will feature multiple cargo areas, including a spacious main RoRo deck, a specialized compartment for space-related cargo with controlled environmental conditions, and a flexible open deck. Its propulsion system will integrate conventional mechanical power with three automated OceanWings rigid sails to enhance efficiency. This innovative technology was chosen for its performance and compatibility with the vessel’s operational needs, contributing to a reduced environmental footprint through various measures, including optimized hull design and the use of biofuels.
