V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) has launched its inaugural Sustainability Report 2026, titled “Towards a Green Maritime Future,” making it India’s first major port to issue a dedicated sustainability report. Notable guests at the launch included Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other key officials. The report underscores the port’s advancements in clean energy, green hydrogen initiatives, and its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2026, viewing sustainability as essential for resilience and competitive advantage rather than mere regulatory compliance.
A significant highlight is VOCPA’s acknowledgment as one of three Green Hydrogen Hubs in India, with early production set to scale from 8 kg/day to over 600 kg/day by 2029. The port aims to develop an integrated green fuel ecosystem, including a methanol bunkering facility and allocated land for green ammonia production. By FY2026, VOCPA achieved 94% renewable energy share in electricity consumption and successfully offset nearly half of its carbon emissions.
The report also details VOCPA’s strong operational performance, handling over 43 million tonnes of cargo with notable improvements in efficiency metrics. Additionally, VOCPA is committed to community welfare, having invested significantly in healthcare and education initiatives. Looking ahead, the port intends to expand its renewable energy capabilities, aligning with broader sustainability goals outlined in national initiatives.
