Saab UK and Kraken Technology Group have collaborated to create an autonomous surface vessel that utilizes maritime robotics and radar technology to identify potential drone threats near shipping routes and critical infrastructure. This innovative system combines Saab’s Giraffe 1X 3D radar with the K3 Scout uncrewed surface vessel, resulting in a prototype designed specifically for counter-drone detection in maritime settings. The K3 Scout is capable of autonomous operation and can be equipped with various mission payloads, enhancing its functionality in detecting and tracking airborne targets, thus providing early warnings of drone activities around ports and offshore installations.
The prototype has progressed from concept to a functional vessel in under seven months, including successful sea trials to evaluate radar performance in challenging maritime conditions. The lightweight Giraffe 1X radar enables real-time detection and tracking of airborne threats, allowing deployment without endangering personnel aboard traditional vessels. Kraken emphasizes that the K3 Scout was specifically designed to integrate mission-relevant payloads and operate effectively in demanding maritime environments.
While the prototype shows promise for use around ports, offshore energy facilities, and other vital infrastructure, it remains in the experimental phase, with no commercial deployment or specific customers announced yet. The development highlights the increasing reliance on uncrewed platforms to enhance monitoring capabilities in areas where continuous oversight is challenging or expensive, suggesting a future where autonomous systems work alongside crewed maritime assets.
