Despite having one of the Caribbean’s most valuable marine industries, residents of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) face significant challenges in accessing financing, obtaining adequate training, and navigating high operational costs. These issues were highlighted during a recent marine industry forum aimed at enhancing local ownership and economic benefits within the sector. Boat captain Ramone George expressed disappointment over the lack of educational initiatives that introduce young BVIslanders to the marine industry, which he believes is among the world’s top three. He noted that high school graduates often struggle with the rigorous demands of formal training, leading to disillusionment.
Financing remains a major barrier, as local banks are reluctant to provide loans for purchasing boats, which are essential for starting marine businesses. Walford Farrington, owner of North Sound Power Boat Services, criticized banks for prioritizing car loans over boat financing, making it difficult for aspiring boat owners to secure necessary funds. This financial hurdle is exacerbated by the requirement for substantial collateral, which many young residents lack, further hindering their entry into the industry.
The forum’s stakeholders emphasized the need for increased support and mentorship for young BVIslanders to foster their interest and understanding of the marine sector. Peter Island Resort’s General Manager, Edward Lindsay, stressed that passion alone is insufficient; aspiring operators must also gain business acumen to navigate the industry’s complexities. Community leaders discussed the potential for protecting certain segments of the marine industry from foreign competition, particularly day charters, to ensure locals can benefit from this vital economic sector. Without proactive measures, locals risk being sidelined as the industry continues to grow.
