Damen Shipyards Group and SAFEEN Group, part of AD Ports Group’s Maritime & Shipping Cluster, recently set a Guinness World Record for the Most Powerful Electric Tugboat with the Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 Bu Tinah. This fully electric tug, which achieved an average high peak pull of 78.2 tonnes, is the first of its kind to operate in the Middle East. The record-breaking performance took place at Khalifa Port, showcasing the vessel’s capability and sustainability.
The achievement highlights the industry’s shift towards alternative energy without compromising performance. Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of AD Ports Group’s Maritime & Shipping Cluster, emphasized how the electric tug is enhancing sustainability and cost efficiencies. The RSD-E Tug 2513 is designed with a focus on zero emissions, playing a crucial role in reducing environmental impact.
Damen’s electric tug development has been at the forefront, with the RSD-E Tug 2513 building on the efficient design of its diesel propulsion counterpart. The vessel, with a length of 24.73 meters and the ability to operate at speeds of up to 12 knots, can be recharged in just two hours. Its versatility allows for customization with options for oil and pollution control or fire fighting. Damen’s commitment to electric tug innovation is evident in their track record of delivering groundbreaking vessels like Sparky, the world’s first electric harbor tug, which won the prestigious “Tug of the Year” award in 2022.
