UKMTO has indicated that commercial vessels are facing a heightened threat, especially along the southern Omani route. Since July 6, 31 out of 48 projectile strike incidents reported to UKMTO occurred in this area. Notably, 25 of these incidents resulted in damage to engine rooms, underscoring the vulnerability of vessels’ propulsion and maneuverability systems. The agency also noted that some incidents might not have been reported or verified independently.
In a separate incident, five Indian nationals on the Kuwait-flagged tanker MT Kazimah III were successfully rescued after the vessel was hit by a projectile while navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Embassy in Oman facilitated the rescue in coordination with Omani authorities and expressed gratitude for their support. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, over 4,500 Indian seafarers are currently operating on commercial vessels in the region.
The UKMTO reported that no diplomatic solutions have been achieved, and the maritime threat in the region remains high. The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) has classified the threat level in the Strait of Hormuz as severe due to the significant risk of hostile actions, ongoing navigation disruptions, and possible mining activities. Meanwhile, the Gulf of Oman is rated as moderate, with reports of electronic interference and enforcement actions, while the Arabian Gulf also maintains a moderate threat level.
